What is Social Emotional Learning (SEL)?

Social Emotional Learning is the process of developing self-awareness, self-control and interpersonal skills that are vital to thrive at school, work and life. It helps children understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy towards others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make informed individual and social choices.

Children are more successful in school and in life when they:

•  Understand themselves and their emotions and can self regulate

•  Make sound choices about personal and social decisions

•  Understand the perspectives of others and relate effectively to them

Why Social Emotional Learning (SEL)?

The goal of teaching social and emotional skills is to build children’s emotional well-being, social skills and resilience eraly on – so that as they grow, they can adapt and handle whatever comes their way and thrive.

Grow UP with SpringUP

With the rapid advancement of technology and evolving societal structures, being able to handle change in an emotionally-balanced and sustained manner would be an essential skill for happiness and success. Skills required for employment in the future are unforeseeable and will require that the learner be malleable. Being able to think through and make connections, collaborate meaningfully in diverse cultural and ethical settings, and make conscious informed choices in one’s changing life scape will directly correlate to one’s life outcomes.

In such a scenario, education for children needs to focus on more than cognitive skills and test-based learning outcomes. Effective SEL programs gently help children step out of their comfort zones and engage in diverse thoughts, views, opinions and future possibilities through experiential sessions which may not be readily accessible within a school’s framework or at home. A sequenced, intentional and focused approach toward developing social and emotional skills in children through an active learning program is a gift of a lifetime. Active learning allows your child to learn ‘by doing’.

Embedding social and emotional development in the early years of childhood development enhances a child’s ability to do better in school, at work, and in life. Social-Emotional development is multifaceted. Research-based evidence shows that children who have been through a well-planned SEL program do better at academics, show improved attitudes, behaviors, and relationships with peers, as well as a deeper connection to the world around them.
